1999 was a very good year for Bollywood as Bollywood said goodbye to the last year of 20th century with some very promising movies directed by some very talented filmmakers. Although 1999 will also be remembered for Kargil War and Cricket World Cup in England which also affected the business of movies released during that period.

Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam was romantic drama starring Salamn Khan, Aishwarya Rai and Ajay Devgan directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam was one of the best shot movie using the beautiful locations of Gujarat, Rajasthan and Budapest. Locations of Budapest was used to represent Italy. Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam was a spectacle for its beautiful sets designed by Nitin C. Desai for which he won Filmfare as well as National Award for Best Art Direction.
The plot of the movie is about Sameer (Salman Khan) who comes from Italy to India to learn music from one of the renowned musician Pandit Darbar (Vikram Gokhle) and falls in love with his daughter Nandini (Aishwarya Rai). Pandit disapprove their love and takes promise from Sameer to leave India as his ‘Guru Dakshina’ which is a customary fees given by the student to his teacher. Nandini gets married to Vanraj (Ajay Devgan) but when he learns that Nandini loves Sameer, he takes her to Italy to find Sameer. After watching the Vanraj’s love and devotion towards her Nandini realizes that it is Vanraj who is her real soul mate. She leaves Sameer even after finding him and comes back to Vanraj.
Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam was a blockbuster at the box office for its story, screenplay, acting and above all great music by Ismail Darbar who made his debut as a music director with Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. All the songs of the movie were chartbusters including ‘Tadap tadap ke’, ‘Dholi taro dhol baaje’, ‘Chaand chupa badal mein’, ‘Nimbuda’ and title song of Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. Ismail Darbar won R D Burman Award in Filmfare and National Award of Best Music Director for Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. Ajay Devgan got more accolades and critical praise for his acting than Salman Khan as his role was more intense and sympathetic in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. Although both Ajay Devgan and Salman Khan were nominated for Filmfare Award of Best Actor for this movie.
Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam was nominated for 16 Filmfare Awards and won 7 awards including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actress (Aishwarya Rai), Best Male Playback Singer to Udit Narayan for ‘Chand chupa’ and Best Choreographer to Saroj Khan for ‘Nimbuda’ song. Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam was first big hit for Aishwarya Rai and she also got critical appreciation for her acting. It was a great boost for her acting because she was earlier tagged as a beauty queen who into movies but does not know how to act.
