Second half of the 1999 witnessed some blockbuster by the renowned makers and some talented directors which made the last year of the 20th Century a promising year for the upcoming 21st century. Here are the best movie of the second half of 1999
Subhash Ghai’s Taal was a musical love story starring Anil Kapoor, Akshaye Khanna, Aishwarya Rai and Amrish Puri. Taal is the love story of Manav (Akshaye Khanna) who is the son of a rich industrialist Jagmohan Mehta (Amrish Puri) and Mansi (Aishwarya Rai) who is daughter of a folk singer Tara Babu (Alok Nath). They got separated when Tara Babu is insulted by Jagmohan’s rich family. Mansi then joins Vikrant Kapoor (Anil Kapoor) who is a famous music director and soon becomes a singing sensation.
Manav comes to know about the insult of Tara Babu from his family members and he apologizes to Mansi but she rejects him. Vikrant proposes Mansi as he also loves her although he knows everything about love affair between Manav and Mansi. Meanwhile after realizing his mistake Jagmohan apologizes to Tara Babu and patches up with him. In the end, Vikrant realizes than Mansi still loves Manav and he tell Mansi to leave him and go to Manav on the day of their wedding. Mansi and Manav got re-united and they got married in the end.
Taal was a hit at the box office due to its direction, acting and musical score by A. R. Rehman. Taal is considered one of the best works of Rehman as it has melodious and soulful tracks penned by Anand Bakshi. All the songs of Taal including ‘Ishq bina’, ‘Taal se taal’, ‘Ramta jogi’, ‘Nahin samne’, ‘Kahin aag lage’ and ‘Ni main samjh gayee’ were popular among the listeners and Taal’s album was bestseller of the year. A. R. Rehman won Filmfare Award of Best Music for Taal. Anand Bakshi also won Filmfare Award of Best Lyrics for the song ‘Ishq bina’.
Anil Kapoor won Filmfare Award of Best Supporting Actor for Taal although this role was first offered to Govinda which he declined. Anil Kapoor was reluctant to do this film as the role demanded a lot of dancing which was not Anil Kapoor’s forte. Anil Kapoor took special training of classic dancing to prepare for this role. Aishwarya Rai also received a lot critical praise for her acting and she was also nominated for Best Actress in a leading role, although she won it for Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. Success of Taal gave a boost to Akshaye Khanna who was struggling in his acting career and during the filming of Taal, Akshaye Khanna and Anil Kapoor became friends.
